Your guide to POS

Point of Sale (POS) kits are essential tools for increasing product visibility and driving impulse purchases in convenience stores. Discover how using branded POS materials can attract shoppers' attention and significantly boost your sales.

When shoppers notice a product in-store, they often consider buying it, even if it wasn't on their shopping list. One effective strategy to boost your impulse purchases is the use of Point of Sale (POS) kits, which make products more visible and appealing to customers.

Why use POS kits?

When shoppers notice a product in store they can’t help thinking, just for a moment, about buying it. Some of them will go ahead and buy it, even if they didn’t plan to.

If you can make products more visible, shoppers are more likely to buy. It’s that simple.

With limited space in store, POS kits are a great way to increase product visibility and sell more.

How much can POS increase sales?

Around 30% of shopper purchases are typically made on impulse. Top impulse buying categories include confectionery/sweet snacks, grocery, soft drinks, lottery and savoury snacks.

In early 2025, Better Retailing reported on a convenience store trial where well-sited POS increased sweet biscuit sales by 189%.

So getting your POS right could have a BIG impact.

Why should I use branded POS?

POPAI research shows that for every 100 convenience shoppers who notice branded POS, 6 will buy the product.

For unbranded POS, that figure drops to 3 buyers. So branded POS is twice as effective as unbranded POS.

Why? Because brands are instantly recognisable.

Familiar logos and colours instantly bring to mind brands that busy shoppers know and trust. Noticing these brands encourages shoppers to buy products on impulse.

Branded POS kits also look professional: they reinforce shopper impressions of a store that sells high quality products.

How do the different types of POS work?

Let's tell you more...

Posters and Window Clings

Branded posters and window clings bring shoppers’ favourite brands to mind before they enter your store.

This primes shoppers so they are more likely to buy on impulse if they see the product in store.

Wobblers

Dangling from a clear plastic arm, wobblers bob around as shoppers walk past.

This movement is great for attracting shopper attention to the wobbler and the products around it.

Shelf strips

Branded strips add a familiar block of colour to shelves.

This helps the shelf stand out to shoppers on a busy fixture and makes similar products easy to find.

Shelf barkers

Standing higher than the shelf edge, shelf barkers grab shopper attention by breaking up the long lines of shelving in busy aisles.

By drawing the eye to what looks different, shelf barkers make the products around them more likely to be noticed by shoppers and bought.

Shelf reservers

Shelf reservers have a similar effect to shelf barkers but are more permanent: they also line the shelf and hold one SRP of product.

Reservers work by magnifying the brand presence on the shelf, encouraging shoppers to take a closer look and pick up a product.

Clip strips

These let you display hanging products in a secondary location, away from the main fixture – this is an important way to get more shoppers to notice the product.

Because clip strips hang on the sides of fixtures, they are a great way to make sure you are using all the selling space in your store.

Clip strips work best when placed next to something that shoppers plan to come in and buy: for example, putting sweet snacks next to soft drinks, magazines or lottery terminals is a great way to boost sales.
