How to register with local business directories

Being on local business directories (like Yelp and Yell) can help independent retailers improve online visibility, attract nearby customers and build credibility.

Local directories like Yelp and Yell are powerful tools for helping customers discover your business online. A verified listing not only boosts visibility but also builds trust through reviews and accurate information.

Boost your store's local visibility

This guide will show you how to register and make your profile work for you.

How to Register Your Business
  1. Choose the Right Directories: Start by identifying which platforms are most relevant to your business. Yelp and Yell are great starting points, but also consider a Google Business Profile, Apple Maps profile and any local or industry-specific directories.
  2. Gather Your Business Information: Before registering, make sure you have the following details ready...

     - Business name
     - Address and postcode
     - Phone number
     - Website (if available)
     - Opening hours
     - Business category
     - High-quality photos (e.g. storefront, product on shelves)

  3. Create Your Listing: Visit the directory’s website and follow the sign-up process:

     - Yelp: Go to https://business.yelp.com/ and click “Verify my free listing”
     - Yell: Visit www.yell.com/free-listing and add your business information
  4. Be Consistent: Fill in your details carefully and consistently across all platforms.
  5. Verify Your Listing: Most directories will ask you to verify your business via email, phone, or postcard. This step confirms your ownership and improves trust with customers.
  6. Optimise Your Profile: Once listed, enhance your profile by:

     - Adding a compelling business description
     - Uploading clear, attractive photos
     - Responding to customer reviews
     - Keeping your information up to date
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Inconsistent Information Across Platforms: Make sure your business name, address and contact details are exactly the same on every directory. Inconsistencies can confuse customers and hurt your search engine rankings.
  2. Skipping the Verification Process: Some retailers forget or delay verifying their listings. Unverified businesses may not appear in searches or be may seen as less trustworthy by customers.
  3. Using Low-Quality or No Photos: Images are one of the first things people notice. Avoid blurry or outdated photos – instead, upload clear images of your storefront, products, and team to make a strong impression.
  4. Ignoring Customer Reviews: Not responding to reviews, especially negative ones, can make your business seem disengaged. Always thank customer for positive feedback and address concerns politely and professionally.
